A Journey into the Deaf-World

Ad A new language minority has come to the fore in America as around the world. It is the tight-knit society (some million strong in the United States) that calls itself, in American Sign Language, the "Deaf-World". It has a history, a flourishing culture, and a political agenda.

A Journey into the Deaf-World is a compelling story of this much misunderstood minority as it struggles for self-determination. The book addresses questions such as: What is Deaf culture all about? How are Deaf children raised and educated? And how should they be? What do signed language and Deaf Culture have to offer the Deaf child --and hearing people/ what can we learn from Deaf societies in other lands? How does technology help (and hinder) Deaf people? How do Deaf people integrate into the larger society? Rich in examples from the lives of Deaf people and a synthesis of the latest research findings concerning the deaf world, here is a must-read for professionals and students in such fields as audiology, speech-language pathology, medicine, education of the Deaf, school, rehabilitation & mental health counselling, psychology, interpreting, American Sign Language & Deaf studies, and anyone with a Deaf family member, friend, colleague, or acquaintance. In this comprehensive and engrossing study, three distinguished scholars of Deaf culture one hearing, one deaf, and one coda (child of deaf adults) offer clear, penetrating insights into the existence and makeup of the deaf world, the community whose natural language American Sign Language in the United States is manual and visual.

Bringing the latest social and cultural findings and theories into sharp focus, the authors take us on a fascinating journey to discover what deaf culture is; the benefits of signed language and deaf culture for deaf children and hearing people; how deaf children are now educated and how they could be; how deaf people integrate into the larger society; the nature of American Sign Language; how technology helps (and hurts) deaf people; what can be learned from deaf societies in other lands; the future of the deaf world. Combining thought-provoking intellectual perspectives with enlightening first-hand accounts of life in the deaf world, this landmark volume is vital for professionals working in fields involving deaf people and for those with an interest in deaf studies.

BLACK or WHITE: "Does it matter?"

Ad In the normal course of our lives most of us meet lots of different people and some leave a lasting impression of positive energy in our lives. Mongezi Ngidi makes just such an impression. In Ngidi's short years he has courageously dealt with a lifetime of challenging experiences; any one of which would have sent lesser mortals scurrying into playing the role of victim permanently.

Instead Ngidi is a triumph of the human spirit. His story begins with albinism -an inherited condition that affects skin pigmentation-and had he not been born in South Africa, this would have added many complications to his life, but it wouldn't have made his existence downright difficult. Instead of going into hiding and complaining about discrimination as a result of his albinism, Ngidi has used it as inspiration to put pen to paper. The result is a dynamic book titled BLACK or WHITE: What's the Difference? My Journey with Albinism.

The most fascinating thing about this book is that through the telling of his life story Ngidi has also encapsulated how preposterous racial issues are in South Africa. An encounter with this inspiring young man leaves one feeling mildly ashamed about the trivial moans and groans so many of us constantly wail about. The lesson that Ngidi teaches us is that like him we too have the choice to turn our perceived 'handicaps' into blessings that make us uniquely ourselves. BLACK or WHITE: What's the Difference? My Journey with Albinism is a must read. This is a motivational book by a powerful public speaker that shares his life learning with a broad range of audiences.

The Real Me

Ad In this thought-provoking, true life story, the author relates her painful journey from sheltered, happy baby years through humiliation, heartache, shattered dreams and social stigmas to become a whole, confident woman who defends the cause of the downtrodden. She describes the long road travelled with many questions asked as to why God would not heal her of her deafness, speech impediment and cerebral palsy. Despite having eventually been diagnosed as having above average intelligence, the label of mental retardation followed her in life with years of ridicule from her peers at school and into early adulthood. Throughout her childhood and early womanhood, June had to face obstacles that would have derailed the average person. This had a profound effect on her, and impacted on her selfesteem for many years as she tried to fit in, be accepted and feel normal.

Again and again she came up against the prejudice of society, and the unthinking cruelty of uninformed persons. She nevertheless fought her way through this prejudice and ridicule, to be accepted by her schoolmates, and eventually society. She learned after suffering through teasing, rejection and being misunderstood that God has a plan for each one of us – and that He heals in His way, not necessarily what you want, but what you need.

A handful of pivotal people taught her to believe in herself, convincing her that she was special and not different, and walked alongside her to a life of victory. The God whom her father denied existed, featured significantly in her life. With His help she grew to become the woman of self-worth that she is today. Her story both challenges and encourages the reader, always guiding them gently to Jesus – Lord, Saviour, Healer, and friend.

“I am at peace now, I have accepted the Real Me and hope that I inspire you through this book – that you too will see that all things are possible through God.”
