Sick Of Your Job? Signs That You Need A New Career

25 Jan 2021

Career changes have become a common trend in the last few years. People are looking for jobs that keep them engaged and happy. According to Indeed, 88 percent of people who made a career change were happier since their transition. If you are here, it probably means you start to have doubts about your current path. Here are some signs that you need a new career.

You Don’t Learn New Things

Generally, at work, you have to keep your skills up-to-date to keep up with the industry. Part of the career development process is constantly learning new things to improve your performance. But, if you can’t remember when was the last time you learn a new skill, you probably are stagnated in your job.

If you feel like you learned everything you need to know, and you don’t see a clear path to continue growing in your current career, that can be a sign that it is time to move on. Also, because you are doing things that you could do with your eyes closed, you are probably always bored. Instead, you can learn tech skills and build a new career in that industry. You will probably learn new things and face new challenges every day.

You Don’t Take Advantage of Your Strengths

Everyone has abilities that come easier to them. For example, you can be very good at math and awful at creative endeavors like drawing. Thus, you should be in a career that takes advantage of these skills that are stronger in you. It can be that you are a people person, you are very good at talking, or you have an eye for design. Your career should align with that.

If it doesn’t, then it can be a sign that you are in the wrong career. Imagine that you are terrible at math, and you decide to become a statistician. You probably have been struggling with your job responsibilities and are unhappy with your daily activities. This isn’t a universal rule, but it can serve you as a guide if you doubt your current career path.

It Doesn’t Align With Your Purpose

Have you decided what your purpose in life is? Our purpose is something we decide, and we generally choose it as a long-term goal. It’s like when you die—what is the thing you want to do that you will be proudest of or that you want to be remembered by? Some people decide they want to be helpful to the world and others, or they want to have their own company and give back to the community.

Whatever it is, it probably serves as a motivation to get up every morning and fulfill that goal. If you are in a job that doesn’t align with that, it will be harder for you to use your purpose as motivation. In fact, it will probably be the other way around because you’ll eventually feel like you are wasting your time.

You Find Unhealthy Escapes

Being in a career that isn’t for you can bring negative effects to your health, even if you aren’t aware of it. When you don’t like what you do, it generates more stress. And sometimes, when you start feeling negative emotions, and you don’t know what is causing them or how to manage them, you use unhealthy habits to escape.

Pay attention to your daily routine and look for symptoms like alcohol binging or overeating. It could be a sign that your current job is too much and not the right fit for what you want in life.

What Can You Do?

You can start by accepting that your current career isn’t for you anymore. Then you can start researching new career options. Next, it is always important to know how you will get the qualifications and skills that will be needed. You can check out Online Degree Hero to learn more about what education path you could choose. In Summary

Sometimes people spend years in a career that isn’t for them without realizing it. If you haven’t learned anything new in years, you don’t use your strengths, your job doesn’t align with your purpose, and you feel the need for unhealthy escapes, you might need a new career.
