Emilie Olifant, who lives in Fourways, registered to cast a special votes and she was pleased when her application was approved.

She told ThisAbility that on May 6, an Independent Electoral Commission official called her to arrange for her to cast her special vote from the comfort of her home.

“At 12:30, two friendly officials arrived with my sealed ballot documents. I made my mark and off they went. It was a smooth five-minute session and very friendly,” Emilie said.

“The leadership I voted for, I have confidence that they have heard my plea as a black woman with a disability. I will follow them and monitor the progress. I know… my vote isn’t going to waste.

“My expectation for this coming five years is to see a universally inclusive South Africa where everyone lives together and everyone lives with no fear and prejudice.

“My X is my weapon! My X is my voice! My X is my truth!”
