In a ceremony held at Die Bron Kerk in Cape Town on the 9th of September,2023, the Miss Deaf South Africa pageant pitted twenty five personalities to compete for the 2023 Miss, Mr. and Mrs. Deaf crowns.
Known for its vision to see South Africa’s deaf society develop through the medium of the beauty and entertainment industry, by enhancing self-discipline, confidence, freedom of culture and presenting opportunities to empower people through competition, the pageant had one more reason to celebrate this year-the recognition of the South African Sign Language (SASL) as the 12th official language in South Africa.
The ceremony was officiated by Jabaar Mohamed, Western Cape Provincial Director of DeafSA, who was the Master of Ceremonies and seamlessly conducted the proceedings in the official sign language.
The 2023 Miss Deaf SA crown was won by Monequ Edwards, and the first runner up was Portia Lauren Naidu and second runner up, Ndivuwho Marubini.
In the Ms. Deaf category, Sylvia Mojanko walked away with crown and Justin Makinson took the men’s crown.
