Telkom Pledges Its Support for the #SilentWalk&Run

Johannesburg, 3 September 2024 – The Neema Foundation for the Deaf is pleased to announce that the Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Mr Gayton McKenzie, will be attending the upcoming #SilentWalk&Run event on the 14th September 2024 at Marks Park, Emmarentia.

Ms. Itumeleng Motaung, Chairperson of the Neema Foundation, says the Foundation is honoured to have the Minister joining the event. “Their attendance underscores the importance of Deaf Awareness Month and aligns with our mission to create a society where the Deaf community is fully included and supported,” she said.

Ms. Motaung was also pleased with Telkom’s participation alongside Africanbank’s partnership, now in its second year. “We are grateful for the support from corporates and the government. This goes a long way in ensuring the Deaf community is supported,” she added.

The #SilentWalk&Run event, spearheaded by the Neema Foundation in collaboration with the City of Joburg and other stakeholders, is an initiative aimed at fostering unity between the Deaf and hearing communities. The event serves as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the Deaf community and to celebrate their contribution to society.

Ahead of September Deaf Awareness Month, City of Joburg’s MMC for Health and Social Development Cllr Ennie Makhafola, encourages everyone to learn SA Sign Language (SASL).

“Learning SASL will contribute towards the inclusion of the Deaf community in the mainstream society. Let’s support the Deaf and hard-of-hearing victims of GBV. I plead with the residents of the City of Johannesburg, COJ staff members, civil organisations, youth organisations, political leaders and councillors to spare a thought for people who are Deaf and participate in the 8th Annual #Silent Walk and Run 2024,” she said.

Commenting on Telkom’s involvement in the #SilentWalk&Run event, Mooketsi Mocumi, Executive of Group Communications, highlighted the company’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment of people with disabilities. in the workplace.

“Our support for this event stems from our belief in creating a society where everyone is valued and connected to a better life. We hope our participation not only strengthens the Deaf community but also inspires others to support and foster inclusivity,” he added.

 Event Highlights

The #SilentWalk&Run 2024 promises a fun-filled experience, including a fun walk/run with opportunities to learn sign language through activities along the route. Event activities include:

  • Deaf Masterclass
  • Silent Aerobics & Yoga
  • Information Exhibition
  • Arts and Crafts Market by Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN)
  • Various Entertainment by Deaf Persons
  • Children’s Play Area and many More

Participants from the hearing community are encouraged to walk alongside their Deaf peers to raise awareness and reduce barriers and stereotypes within communities and organisations.
