The Pioneering South African House Music Icon Brings His Elegant Activism and Inspirational Beats to Kyalami

By Simon Manda

Johannesburg, September 2025 – The DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival Powered by LottoStar is thrilled to announce that legendary South African house music pioneer DJ Kabila will perform on Sunday, 21 September 2025, at the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Known to his peers as “The General,” DJ Kabila will grace the Channel O Dance Stage alongside fellow era-defining artists, bringing his elegant brand of house music to what promises to be an unforgettable Heritage Month celebration.

A Legend Born from Adversity

Real name Siyanda Makanya, DJ Kabila’s extraordinary journey embodies the very spirit of resilience that defines South African culture. Hailing from the township of Mthatha in the Eastern Cape—the same hometown that nurtured Grammy-winning global superstar Black Coffee—Kabila’s story is one of triumph over adversity and unwavering dedication to the craft of house music.

In September 1999, at the age of 21, a life-changing car accident left Dj Kabila in a wheelchair. Yet, rather than allowing this setback to define him, the talented artist channelled his passion for music into an even more focused pursuit of excellence. Remarkably, it was exactly two months after his accident that he began exploring his talent with beats, demonstrating extraordinary resilience in overcoming this life-changing ordeal.

Before his accident, Kabila was not only a music genius behind the decks but also a phenomenal dancer. This talent remains evident today in the manner in which he still dances in his wheelchair. This infectious energy and undeniable passion for movement continue to captivate audiences worldwide, proving that true artistry transcends any physical limitations.

The Black Coffee Connection: A Brotherhood of House Music Royalty

The connection between DJ Kabila and Black Coffee runs deeper than mere professional collaboration – it’s a bond forged in their shared roots and mutual respect for the transformative power of house music. Black Coffee has been instrumental in Kabila’s career, signing him to his label and consistently believing in his talent. The two are childhood friends who grew up together in Mthatha, and their partnership represents one of South African house music’s most inspiring relationships.

“Black Coffee has supported me… he is the one who signed me and believed in my talent. Even with some opportunities as well, he sees the opportunities where I can fit in. He would invite me because he believes so much in my talent,” Kabila shared in a recent interview.

This brotherhood has produced remarkable musical moments, including Kabila’s hit track “Atsha Pha” featuring Toshi, which received international recognition and had its remix selected for DJ Black Coffee’s Ibiza Appreciation Mix. The collaboration showcases how their shared Eastern Cape heritage and deep understanding of house music’s spiritual essence create magic on the dance floor.

Over Two Decades of House Music Excellence

DJ Kabila has been present on the Afro house scene for over 20 years, establishing himself as a DJ known and recognised by his peers for his virtuosity, present at the biggest venues and events in South Africa. His journey through the industry has been marked by consistent innovation and an unwavering commitment to elevating South African house music on the global stage.

In 2006, DJ Kabila “The General” joined Black Coffee’s prestigious Soulistic Music label, which provided an incredible platform for this star with no limits. This partnership led to the release of his debut album “Believe” in 2007, featuring the hit track “Amantombazane”, which became his favourite track and saw him perform at various venues across the country.

His discography continued to evolve with the well-received “Soulistic Music Cuts Vol. 1 Compilation Album” in 2011, featuring collaborations with Black Coffee, MXO, Sai & Ribatone, and American vocalist Marissa Guzman on “Time to Go,” which earned a South African Music Awards nomination in the Best Remixed Tracks category.

International Recognition and Ibiza Glory

One of the greatest highlights in Kabila’s career was playing in Ibiza, which he describes as “one of the biggest clubs in the world”, where he “left people emotional with how I play my music”. This international recognition solidifies his position as a truly global ambassador for South African house music.

DJ Kabila’s recent album “A New Dawn” (2022) was nominated for Best Dance Album at the 2023 South African Music Awards, whilst his Ibiza DJ set in August 2023 was featured on Clubbing TV and Pure Ibiza Global Radio, further cementing his international standing.

Beyond the Decks: Activism and Social Impact

DJ Kabila’s influence extends far beyond entertainment. In 2007, he founded Beyond Disability Organisation, designed to champion the sidelining of the disabled community and improve the standard of living for the physically disabled public. He also established the DJ Kabila Foundation, which aims to develop schools for the physically disabled, with the Mason Lincoln Special School in Umlazi Township, Durban, identified as a beneficiary.

His inspirational 2019 track, “Somnyama”, featuring Wendy Soni, celebrates Black beauty, Black excellence, and Black pride, inspired by resilient African Black Women, from icons like Winnie Madikizela Mandela to contemporary figures like Caster Semenya.
