April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the challenges faced by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and recognise the strides made in supporting their inclusion in all aspects of society. At iSchoolAfrica, we are proud to play a pivotal role in transforming the educational experience for learners with autism, particularly in under-resourced areas. Through the integration of iPad technology, we are unlocking new opportunities for learners to thrive, engage and communicate in ways that were previously unimaginable, writes Zulaikha Goolam, iSchoolAfrica Disability and Inclusion Programme Manager.

Autism is a global reality, with one in every 100 individuals on the autism spectrum and approximately 270,000 people in South Africa believed to be living with autism. However, these numbers are likely underreported due to diagnostic challenges and stigma. A Western Cape study, for instance, found that only 940 children with autism were identified in a population of over a million, suggesting a significant under-
identification of ASD in schools. In South Africa, the majority of children with autism are placed in special schools, but only a small percentage have access to the resources needed to support their learning potential fully.

This is where the innovative use of iPad technology by iSchoolAfrica can significantly transform education. Technology has revolutionised education by offering personalised, adaptive and engaging learning experiences that are particularly impactful for children with autism. In traditional classrooms, their unique communication methods and sensory needs are often not catered to, leading to communication difficulties and social interaction issues. These barriers are compounded in under-resourced schools, where funding for special education may be limited and support systems are often insufficient. Technology, however, has the potential to bridge these gaps by providing tools that cater to the unique needs of learners with autism.

Personalised Learning Experiences
At iSchoolAfrica, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of technology in creating inclusive, accessible and personalised learning environments. iPads, equipped with built-in accessibility features and loaded with customised apps and resources, have become indispensable tools. These devices offer learners the opportunity to engage with content in a way that respects their individual learning needs and preferences. For many learners with autism, who often tend to be visual learners, interactive apps with visual aids and stimuli help convey complex concepts in an accessible manner. This approach ensures that learners are neither overwhelmed nor disengaged and that their learning experiences are both challenging and rewarding.

Communication and Social Skills Development
For many children with autism, communication can be a significant challenge. Traditional communication methods often fail to meet their needs, leaving them frustrated and isolated. Technology is addressing this issue by offering Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. These tools provide non-verbal and minimally verbal learners their first opportunity to communicate. The iSchoolAfrica
programme makes it possible for learners with autism in under-resourced areas to access high-tech AAC functionality which is already built into the iPad, with no additional clumsiness and often expensive devices needed. We introduce learners to speech-generating apps that allow them to showcase their true potential by freely expressing their thoughts, needs and emotions. This implementation fosters independence, increases self-expression, and promotes a sense of agency in learners who might otherwise struggle to connect with their peers and teachers.

In addition to communication, technology plays a crucial role in helping learners with autism develop social skills. Social interaction is often a challenge for children with autism, but virtual environments and role-playing apps can simulate real-world scenarios in a low-stress setting. These tools give learners the opportunity to practise social interactions, build confidence, and learn pragmatic skills. Apps like Keynote can
also be used to create social stories that help learners better understand social norms and expectations. By engaging in these interactive experiences, children gain the skills they need to navigate social situations more effectively, improving their overall social competence.

Empowering Learners Through Technology
As we celebrate Autism Awareness Month, it’s essential to acknowledge the transformative power of technology in the lives of learners with autism. By leveraging accessible technology and ensuring the upskilling of teachers and therapists, iSchoolAfrica is not only supporting the educational goals of these learners but is also empowering them to communicate, engage and connect with their peers and the world
around them. Our work in under-resourced communities is proof that, with the right tools, training and resources, every learner—regardless of their circumstances—can achieve their potential. By embracing technology, we’re helping create a more inclusive and equitable world where every learner, regardless of their challenges, has the opportunity to thrive.

iSchoolAfrica’s Disability Inclusion Programme is a testament to the impact of technology in education. By providing specialised training for teachers, therapists, parents and learners, and by selecting apps and content tailored to special needs, we ensure that learners with disabilities are not left behind. Instead, they are equipped with the tools to excel in education and beyond. The recognition of Dorothea Special School as the first Apple Distinguished Special Needs School in the world underscores the excellence and leadership in educational innovation that iSchoolAfrica embodies. Through our collaborative efforts, we are reshaping the educational landscape to ensure
that no learner is left behind.
