Flame of Hope
Carousel Casino, 2 December 2025 — Special Olympics South Africa hosted a moving and symbolic Flame of Hope Handover Ceremony today, marking the official transition of the Flame from the Limpopo Province to the North West Province.
The ceremony brought together leaders from government, the disability sector, the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, law enforcement, and traditional leadership, all joining in a united stand for dignity, respect, and inclusion for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A Symbol of Light, Unity, and Inclusion
The Flame of Hope is one of the most enduring global symbols of the Special Olympics movement. Its light represents courage, possibility, and the unwavering belief that every person—regardless of intellectual ability—has a place and purpose within society.
Protected and carried worldwide by law enforcement officials through the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), the Flame reflects the extraordinary partnership between Special Olympics and law enforcement agencies.
These officers serve as guardians of the Flame of Hope, symbolising their commitment to equality and community inclusion.
At today’s ceremony, both Limpopo and North West SAPS leadership reaffirmed their role as protectors of the Flame and advocates for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A National Commitment to Persons with Disabilities
The presence of the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) reinforced the significance of the event at a national level. DWYPD’s participation highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to championing the rights, visibility, and empowerment of persons with disabilities across South Africa.
Their support emphasised that the Flame of Hope represents not only a provincial commitment but a national call to action for inclusion, unity, and collaboration.
Passing the Torch: Limpopo to North West
Limpopo Province reflected on their proud role as the previous hosts of the Special Olympics South Africa National Games and expressed confidence in North West Province as the next custodians of the Flame. The handover signified the passing of responsibility, encouragement, and solidarity as preparations began for the 2026 Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games.
North West Province formally accepted the Flame with a pledge to uphold and protect its values. Provincial leaders expressed their readiness to welcome athletes, families, coaches, and supporters from across the country next year.

Igniting a Journey of Inclusion
As the Flame begins its journey through the North West Province, it will shine as a reminder of what is possible when communities come together with purpose and compassion. The 2026 Games will not only celebrate sport—they will celebrate belonging, opportunity, and the unbreakable spirit of Special Olympics athletes.
The ceremony closed with gratitude to all partners, including government departments, law enforcement members, traditional leadership, and the communities who continue to support the Special Olympics mission.
