From Soweto to Nairobi: Radio Founder’s Journey to Advocate for Disability Rights in Broadcasting
Tebogo Poopedi, the visionary founder and broadcaster of Skills Village Radio, an internet radio station based in Soweto, South Africa, has been invited to participate at this year’s Inable Conference in Kenya.
The conference, which brings together disability rights advocates, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders worldwide, will feature Poopedi in a plenary session where he will discuss opportunities in media and broadcasting for persons with disabilities.
As a visually impaired person, Poopedi has firsthand experience of the challenges and barriers that individuals with disabilities face in the media industry. Through his work with Skills Village Radio, he has created a platform that showcases his talents and amplifies the voices of other persons with disabilities in South Africa and beyond.
During his session at the Inable Conference, Poopedi will share his insights on owning a media advocacy platform as a visually impaired person. He will discuss how his experiences have shaped his vision for Skills Village Radio and the importance of creating spaces where persons with disabilities can share their stories, talents, and perspectives.
“I am thrilled to be invited to speak at the Inable Conference this year,” said Poopedi. “Last year, I had the opportunity to start conversations with the Inable team, and I am honoured to be invited in person this year to talk about the intersection of media, technology, and disability. We must foster international partnerships, secure funding, and ensure the representation of voices of persons with disabilities in the media.”
