KwaDukuza-born Menzi Nxumalo has given more than 20 people mobility with his determination to provide wheelchairs to the disabled.
A few years ago, Nxumalo challenged himself to using a friend’s wheelchair to get around a shopping mall.
He was horrified at how difficult it was.
From trying to get a taxi to navigating narrow aisles and lifts, his eyes were opened to the obstacles disabled people face every day.
Nxumalo is now the founder of Nokusa Support For Disabled People (NPC), formed in 2018, that identifies people with disabilities who need help and now also does skills development in townships and rural areas.
His most recent project was in Shakaville where he donated a wheelchair to a woman who had her legs amputated due to diabetes.
“There is a lot that needs to be done for her because even the house she stays in is not suitable for a disabled person, but hopefully we will be able to raise funds to support her.”
In his day job Nxumalo is a presenter for online radio station BlaqLife Radio and is a popular events MC.
“I was raised by a single mother and life was not easy but she always said ‘never forget to pray and always give back to other people’. She is why I started NPC, with no capital but depending solely on donations. She taught me that you do not need to be wealthy to make a difference,” said Nxumalo, who raised money for many a wheelchair by offering face painting at malls.
“Everything you do today is not about you but its for the next generation so lets work together to make a better future for all.”
He said there were a great number of people waiting for wheelchairs on their database and they would appreciate any donations of new or used wheel chairs.
