The Thusong Centre for the Mentally Disabled brought awareness to the public saying that disabled people should too be included in society.
Thusong Centre for the Mentally Disabled made sure that the public would hear their message loud and clear as they held a wellness programme to bring awareness to the challenges and lives of those who live with disabilities.
The programme, presented on July 27, was an educational and fun-filled event to celebrate Disability Pride Month.
Thusong Centre was established in 1996 by the Mogale City Health Department for the sole purpose of accommodating people with physical and mental disabilities. The non-profit has various programmes in education, skills development and training for disabled people. Many members of the public came in support of the event and were addressed on how can they play their part in ensuring the safety and protection of their disabled loved ones.
They engage in various activities from dancing, being spoiled with food and taking part in various games.
Katlego Motlamelle who was one of the main speakers at the event urged those without disabilities to play a role in ensuring that vulnerable people are protected.
”Those with disabilities are just as human as those without, they have rights that need to be protected, so I appeal to those without physical challenges to be aware of that and protect their rights.”
The disability centre not only hopes to bring awareness to disabled people but also hopes to develop them to be included in society, according to project manager Dolly Mogapi.
“We have various skills development programmes like literacy, numeracy and agriculture programmes to assist our clients in finding jobs and reaching their full potential,” added Dolly.
